How to Wear Birkenstocks for Fall

Happy first day of autumn! It’s officially my favorite time of the year and I am so excited! The air gets crisp, the sky turns grey, and leaves begin to change. I layer blanket scarves over thick coats, over chunky sweaters. Ok, I’m getting carried away. It isn’t that cold yet. Many of us are experiencing mild weather, and if you are in San Francisco, like me, you are confused by the tropical rain one day, and hot or cold weather the next. This can pose a fashion challenge for some people as they transition into the new season.

Although I embrace the cold with open arms (fall and winter fashion is so much more chic), I am not quite ready to give up my Birkenstocks. They are the most comfortable shoes ever placed on this earth. I will be wearing mine for as long as the weather permits, but tweaking my outfits to change with the season.

When trying to wear your Birks for these first couple weeks of fall, the key is to work with color and different fabrications. You either want the look to be warm and cozy with light color pairings, or play with minimal layering and darker colors. It is all about having both ends of the fashion spectrum present.  This allows you to wear your sandals without looking as though they were an after thought.

By default, I stuck with an almost all black look. I wore black skinnies, a loose grey t-shirt, and layered with a leather motorcycle jacket. The jersey cotton scarf was added incase a breeze came in.

These Amalfi leather sandals are very versatile in my opinion. This leather looks so luxe as opposed to my oiled leather options.

Accessories were kept to a minimum, as usual with me. Over accessorizing clutters an outfit. These Nina Ricci aviators were the perfect sunnies to go with my dark look. They complimented my jacket and Birks well, giving the outfit a touch of minimalistic edge.
